For the last two years AMI has assisted the Indiana Mineral Aggregates Association with their annual Teachers' Workshop. The 2010 Workshop was a great success, culminating in a standing ovation from the teachers in response to the hard work of the PIE Committee! This was the sixteenth year for the IMAA to host the Teachers' Workshop.
AMI was in attendance to take photographs, assist with the hands on sessions, and play music during the cookout at Brandeis. Edd Perdue brought AMI's mini jaw crusher to the cookout. The teachers were able to have a more hands on experience with the equipment they would see in the quarries over the next couple of days.
The registered teachers are expected to learn and experience the following:
- The workshop will focus on the identification, economic
value, and the uses of a variety of earth materials in
modern society.
- Materials specially created for K-12 science education
programs.
- Participants may earn one graduate credit hour from
Indiana University School of Education and/or nine CRUs.
- Hands on sessions that use the analogs of mining bird
seed and chocolate chip cookies will offer a novel
approach to mining procedures and economics.
- Tour an active aggregate mining operation. On-site
instruction will be provided concerning extraction
technology, quality control, and how industry addresses
the environmental implication of aggregate mining.

IMAA Grassroots Fly-In
On June 9-11, 2010 Michael Garard, Avery Garard and several others from the Indiana Mineral Aggregates membership, took their concerns to our representatives in Washington. There were nearly 40 members who made the trip this year. A small group met with MSHA head, Joe Main just prior to the “official” Fly-In schedule. As you may know, the enforcement procedures and tactics of MSHA recently are of vital importance to our membership. Funding issues will run a close second in our visits.
